Notes: Called 'Rainforest Mix' on plant label. If anyone knows the actual name, please let me know in the comments.
No, I don't know the real name, but it's a beauty. I used to grow Begonias all the time, and then Impatiens became the go-to for my planter boxes. Now I'm going back to Begonias because of downy mildew. Great photos, too!
The downy mildew problem is a pain isn't it. Most places don't even sell impatiens at the moment. There's such a variety of begonias though - which makes it hard for me to get a species name for these! Thanks for your comment.
Hi Tim, 'Rainforest Mix' is not a registered cultivar name. It does sound more like the kind of fancy name given by nurserymen to increase their sales (grr I hate them)! Your plant belongs to the "semperflorens-cultorum" group of Begonias (or "wax begonias" because of their thick glossy leaves). They are hybrids between two South American rainforest species, B. cucullata and B.schmidtiana; and they are very popular in flower beds as they need relatively low water levels compared to most other Begonias. There are often sold as seeds, which will give you a "mix" of pink, red, and whitish plants. Hope this helps :)
Thank you for the excellent information. The name was on the label from a nationwide DIY store with an & in their name!! It is frustrating because it's essentially mis-education leaving people thinking the wrong things :(
