Billion Acts of Green

Today is Earth Day, so I thought it was high time that I actually made my pledge. Earth Day is older than I am, but to be honest, this is the first I've heard of it. It was started in 1970 and now they have 22,000 partners in 192 countries to help them mobilise the environmental movement. The theme this year is to have a billion acts of green pledged on the website. Ranging from biking to work to getting a home energy audit and carrying out what it says! It certainly sounds like a good idea and there's an option for you to type in your own pledge if what you want isn't already there.

My pledge is to plant a garden. To be fair, it was one of the generic ones, chosen because it's something that we're doing over time anyway, but it's something that we'll try to bring forward. It'll be nice to have Earth Day in mind when planting out new things. The next major planting that we expect to do in the garden is sow some wild flower seeds around the new Apple trees and raspberry bushes. This should help bring in lots of pollinators and it'll make that end of the garden look better. what also made me feel good what to see the Woodland Trust is one of the partners of the Earth Day Movement - it made me realise that this is a good and important thing. Have a look if some of your favorite charities are involved: http://act.earthday.org/partners

As a side note, Google have designed a really cool 'gardening' themed Google Doodle, which makes me glad I chose the gardening pledge. It's of a 'Google' bed of flowers growing a coming into bloom!

Take a look at the Earth Day website and if you can, make a pledge. Even if it's something that you're planning to do, or possibly have been putting off doing - it'll be nice to attribute your act to Earth Day and know that you're joining a billion people with what you're doing. http://act.earthday.org/

Oh, and before I forget - Happy Earth Day!

    1. Hi, thanks. To make a start we put up some trellis today. We're on the lookout for an evergreen climber. Hopefully one good for pollination!
